About Symbio

element_symbio

A new generation of parts manufacturer, Symbio designs hydrogen fuel cell moduls that can be incorporated into various types of electric vehicles (utility vehicles, buses, heavy-goods vehicles, boats, etc.) and are associated with a range of services (support for integration, vehicle repairs, remote fleet management, etc.).

Once equipped in this way, these vehicles provide enhanced ease of use (refill in three minutes, autonomy twice that of their battery equivalents, etc.) while remaining “zero emissions”. There are several hundred of them – for the most part, light utility vehicles such as the Kangoo ZE H2) – on the roads in France and across Europe. Founded in 2010, Symbio has the CEA, ENGIE and Michelin as stakeholders.

Patented
technology

The system developed by the company draws on more than 10 French and European patents.

OUR STRENGTHS

A proven capacity
for industrialisation

Symbio draws on the production capacities of Michelin (for batteries and systems) and manufacturers (for installation), meaning we are capable of adapting quickly to market needs and volumes.

Enhanced
adaptability

Generic systems developed by the company – from 5 to 20kW for utility vehicles, for example, and from 80kW to 300kW for buses and trucks – have been adapted to render them compliant with the mechanical constraints inherent in each type and version of the vehicle, working closely with the manufacturers.

An extensive
service offer

At Symbio, we offer our clients full support, from vehicle production (sizing analysis, assessing the interface with existing vehicles and the industrial framework) to market launch (support with marketing, sales and training for after-sales staff), right through to monitoring fleets (remote repairs, sharing consumption data, etc.).

Partners invested
in the deployment
of hydrogen transport

Aside from the obvious involvement of the shareholders ENGIE and Michelin, Symbio coordinates the “Transport” consortium, which groups together various different companies within the French Association for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells (AFHYPAC). At a European level, the company is also supported by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU).

OUR AIMS

Faced with the need to improve the quality of the air in our towns and cities, as well as the need to cut greenhouse gas emissions and to develop renewable energy, the transport sector is left with no choice: a revolution is needed. It must make a clean break from combustion engines – so costly in terms of energy dependence, environmental damage and public health – and start developing electric transport on a large scale.

At Symbio, we intend to play a major role in this transformation, solving what, until recently, has proven to be the major issue facing battery electric vehicles and which explains the low levels of deployment: ease of use. Through the systems developed by the company, not only do these vehicles remain zero emissions, but they can also be “filled” in 3 minutes and boast twice as much autonomy.

OUR VISION

At Symbio, our aim is to become one of the world’s leading new generation parts manufacturers in the field of transport, in terms of both hydrogen battery systems and related digital services.

OUR STORY

They support us

The Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) is a unique public private partnership supporting research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities in fuel cell and hydrogen energy technologies in Europe. Its aim is to accelerate the market introduction of these technologies, realising their potential as an instrument in achieving a carbon-lean energy system. It notably finances projects like Hydrogen Mobility Europe

“The FCH JU supports hydrogen and fuel cell technologies as the most viable and practical solution offering the possibility to fully decarbonise transport without changing the users’ habits. It is proud to see its support boosting innovative companies such as a Symbio, which will add a strategic stepping-stone to the European clean and sustainable mobility solutions.”

Bart Biebuyck, directeur du FCH JU

Hydrogen Mobility Europe is a flagship project giving fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) drivers access to the first truly pan-European network of hydrogen refuelling stations.

« Working with Symbio since many years, we are proud to participate with them to the advancement of hydrogen applications throughout Europe. Symbio has proven to be a reliable long-time partner who converts technical challenges in market achievements. »
