SymphonHy: Europe’s Largest Integrated Hydrogen Fuel Cell Systems Plant

Spanning 26,000 m², SymphonHy is the largest integrated site in Europe dedicated to the development and production of hydrogen fuel cells. Designed to accelerate the development and industrialization of next-generation fuel cell technologies, the site is setting new industry standards by equipping us with unprecedented capabilities at the scale of our sector.

SymphonHy brings together under one roof:

  • Our 7,000 m² R&D center
  • Our manufacturing facility
  • More than 100 test benches
  • Experts across every key discipline in fuel cell technology: chemistry, electrochemistry, materials science, mechatronics, simulation, quality control, and more

As part of our open innovation approach, we assess collaboration opportunities with EU-based SMEs, Research and Technology Organizations (RTOs), and startups interested in conducting development work within our facilities, subject to eligibility criteria and associated costs.

Symbio North America: A Production Site Dedicated to Heavy Mobility

Our North American production facility, located in Temecula, California, is dedicated to assembling hydrogen-powered heavy-duty vehicles (drayage and HD trucks) and producing complete fuel cell systems. This site builds on the “Symbio H2 Central Valley Express” project, supported by the California Energy Commission (CEC), which aims to demonstrate the reliability and benefits of hydrogen mobility for heavy transport. These initiatives contribute to California’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045.

End-to-End Control of the Value Chain for Tailored Solutions

We control all key components of our products: the electrochemical core (MEA), the stack (assembly of bipolar plates and MEAs), and the system (Balance of Plant, operating conditions, packaging). This integrated approach allows us to optimize every performance parameter to develop increasingly efficient, competitive, and scalable systems for each application.
This full control of our value chain has enabled us to develop a proprietary methodology for evaluating system performance across 10 key criteria: Power, Power Density, Durability, Efficiency, Operating Temperature, Product Cost, Quality, Maintainability & Remote Updates, Environmental Impact, and Noise.

Our Industrial Roadmap

  • 2021–2023: Pilot plant. Development of our industrialization processes
  • 2023–2028: Large-scale industrialization. Launch of the SymphonHy gigafactory (Saint-Fons, France)—Europe’s largest integrated fuel cell production site—and the Temecula plant (California, USA)

HyMotive is our transformation project, supported by the European Commission (IPCEI Hy2Tech #NextGenerationEU) and the French government (France Relance, France 2030). It aims to accelerate the industrialization and innovation of Symbio’s technology and to build a robust hydrogen ecosystem in Europe.
